Because Google is in the dictionary, can it by copyrighted?

Question by mets fan: Because Google is in the dictionary, can it by copyrighted?
I always thought that if a word is in the dictionary, it can not be copyrighted. Being that the word google is a recognized word in the English language, is the company still allowed to have its copyright or trademark on it? Once it’s in the dictionary, is it free to everyone?

Best answer:

Answer by Jim L
You are mis-using the term copyright. Google is not a copyrighted item, it is a trademark. In order for a trademark to enter what is called “common usage” a court must decide that is the case. Many common words – aspirin, elevator, linoleum and many others – were once brand names. However, companies have used case law to learn how to prevent their trademarks from being declared common usage, and I’m sure Google has taken the necessary steps to prevent it.

To answer your question directly, being in the dictionary does not mean a brand is legally in common usage.

Question by End Libtardation: Is the dictionary wrong when it defines wrestling as a sport?
“wrestling n. A sport in which two competitors attempt to throw or immobilize each other by grappling.”

I only ask because there seems to have been some confusion on this point recently. If the dictionary is wrong, someone should tell it.

Best answer:

Answer by Rachel M
Wrestling has been a sport for at least two thousand years.
