Q&A: How to get a word recognized by the dictionary?

Question by Zac: How to get a word recognized by the dictionary?
Today I started pondering how one may ‘create’ a word and have it entered into a dictionary. How would I see about doing this? Could be a fun summer project.

Answer by Leslie B
To get it into Webster’s it would have to become a very popular, very often used term. Like they added the term “bootylicious” after a song made that a common word.

My friends say that we can only use a dictionary to verify a challenged word. I have always used a dictionary to help find words to play. Who is right??

I think the only purpose of a dictionary in Scrabble is to look up words to see if they are in fact, real words.

Why don’t the New York Times movie reviews have the dictionary feature enabled?

Question by ouchifell: Why don’t the New York Times movie reviews have the dictionary feature enabled?
This has confused me since nytimes.com introduced a dictionary feature embedded in their online articles. For most articles, when you come across a word that you don’t know, you can double click it and a dictionary will pop up. However, for their movie reviews – and to me, the articles that could use it the most (try reading an A.O. Scott or Dargis review without consulting a dictionary!) – this feature is disabled! What gives New York Times?

Best answer:

good quesh.

maybe they don’t consider reviews important enough.

why don’t you write them enquiring it?
